Learning Swiss German dialect is a challenge. The voCHabular association provides self-study resources to make it easier to integrate into everyday life in Switzerland.
The association supplies the following:
- The voCHabular books are specially designed for self-study. They can be used to learn German and Swiss German at the learner’s own pace. The books are distributed with the support of donations and can be downloaded here or ordered.
- The VoCHi list can be used to look up words in the book.
- The voCHabular recordings contain the various dialogues, vocabulary, exercises, etc. in the books, chapter by chapter.
- The voCHabular app (not available from app stores) can be used to practise topics such as greetings, family relationships, transport, daily routine, etc. The app combines the content of the books and the recordings with exercises, graphics, dialogues and audio files. Users need to register to access the app.
VoCHabular also holds baham workshops in partnership with Solinetz Zürich. The aim is to facilitate interactive intercultural encounters, giving people with a refugee or migrant background the opportunity to meet Swiss people, so that they can carry out activities together, such as an intercultural card game, a quiz or a human library. The workshops take place in a variety of settings.
